Elon Musk is currently living in an Airstream trailer near Memphis as he oversees a major data center project in Tennessee, the billionaire revealed during a recent tech event.
Despite being the world’s richest person, with a net worth approaching $1 trillion, Musk has chosen to stay close to the ground-literally-by residing in the iconic silver Airstream while closely managing SpaceX’s expansion of GPU capacity. This expansion supports xAI, a company absorbed by SpaceX earlier this year, as it ramps up its infrastructure.
Speaking at the All-In Summit, Musk referred to the trailer as his “palace,” drawing chuckles from hosts and SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell. Shotwell highlighted Musk’s hands-on approach, noting that he’s often sleeping right on the factory floor and directly involved in the construction efforts.
The choice of an Airstream is fitting given Musk’s space industry ties-NASA famously used a modified Airstream trailer to quarantine Apollo 11 astronauts after their moon mission. The brand, known for its distinctive riveted aluminum design dating back to the 1930s, has become an American icon.
Musk’s preference for modest living arrangements isn’t new. After acquiring Twitter in 2022, he famously spent nights on a couch at the company’s San Francisco headquarters.
For years, his primary residence was a rented house near SpaceX’s Starbase in Texas, valued at approximately $50,000. He also owns a Boxabl prefab home near Starbase, though he reportedly uses it only as a guest house.
During the All-In event, Musk was asked about the possibility of merging Tesla and SpaceX. While he did not rule it out, he emphasized the significant collaboration already taking place between the two companies and said it’s difficult to predict what the future holds.
With Musk’s intense work ethic and minimal sleep habits, his hands-on involvement in scaling AI infrastructure and potential corporate moves continue to fuel interest in his unique leadership style.
