Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is facing sharp criticism after footage emerged suggesting he may have been texting during a solemn military ceremony.
The incident took place during the National POW/MIA Recognition Day event held at the Pentagon on Friday, a ceremony dedicated to honoring former prisoners of war, personnel missing in action, and their families.
In the televised coverage, Hegseth was seen seated with his back partially to the camera. At one point, he appeared to glance downward before reaching into his pocket, prompting viewers to speculate that he was using his phone.
Social media users quickly expressed their disapproval. Comments ranged from calls for him to “put the phone down” to accusations that he showed disrespect and a lack of interest in the troops being honored.
This controversy comes amid increasing pressure on Hegseth from Senate officials who are calling for his resignation. Several Republican senators who had previously supported his confirmation are now urging President Trump to remove him from office.
Leading the charge is Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who has openly criticized Hegseth’s leadership and labeled it “inept.” Tillis, who will not seek reelection this year, has condemned Hegseth for pushing out experienced military leaders and argued that the Pentagon requires a secretary who can retain and empower military talent.
The resignation of former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll at the end of August further underscores the turmoil within the Department of Defense. Driscoll stepped down reportedly due to conflicts with Hegseth over personnel changes and leadership decisions. Notably, Hegseth has blocked promotions for several senior Army officers and has, since his appointment in January 2025, removed or blocked the advancement of over 80 admirals and generals.
As calls for accountability mount, the future of Hegseth’s tenure as Defense Secretary remains uncertain.
