A devoted father and soon-to-be grandfather, Greg O’Neill, 63, tragically lost his life in a shark attack while swimming at Sorrento Beach, located in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. The incident occurred on Friday, witnessed by horrified beachgoers.
Ryan Rowe, a local who arrived shortly after the attack, described the scene to The West Australian, saying, “I couldn’t believe there was that much blood coming from a human body.”
In response to the attack, Australia’s fisheries minister, Jackie Jarvis, made the uncommon decision to authorize a catch-and-kill order for the great white shark involved-a species typically protected by law. Jarvis explained, “In making that decision, I considered the exceptional circumstances of the attack, the hazard posed by the shark, and the potential recovery of coronial evidence.”
Authorities have not confirmed whether O’Neill’s remains have been recovered but expressed confidence that he died as a result of the shark attack. Witness Darrel Haythornthwaite told Nine Network that O’Neill was swimming alongside a friend when the attack took place.
“I was just shocked. I feel for his mate,” Haythornthwaite said, recounting the friend’s distress and apology for not being able to save him.
O’Neill’s family shared their sorrow with ABC News Australia, describing him as “a generous, devoted family man” who was deeply loved. They highlighted his passion for the ocean, swimming, sports, and his warm, witty personality. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support during this difficult time.
This fatal attack marks the fifth shark-related death in Australia this year. Earlier incidents include the deaths of three spearfishing divers between May and June and a 12-year-old boy in Sydney Harbor in January. Additionally, a surfer suffered serious leg injuries in a shark attack about 250 miles north of Perth on Monday.
