Melissa McCarthy Opens Up on JonBenét Ramsey Case Ahead of Netflix Series
Melissa McCarthy has spoken out about the enduring mystery surrounding the tragic 1996 murder of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey. The actress, who stars as Patsy Ramsey in the forthcoming Netflix limited series The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey, shared her personal perspective on the case in a recent interview with Variety.
JonBenét Ramsey’s death remains one of the most haunting unsolved cases in American history. Found in the basement of her family’s Boulder, Colorado home on Christmas night, the young girl died from strangulation and a severe skull injury.
Despite extensive investigation, the case has never been officially solved. JonBenét’s father continues to hold hope that the truth will eventually come to light.
Reflecting on the case, McCarthy said, “My heart says no one in the family could have done that.” She acknowledged the sensitivity of her stance, adding, “I don’t have the ability, or probably the right, to say that, but that’s what my gut says.
Which I probably am not supposed to say. But shooting that, I had to pick.
I had to have that for myself, if nothing else.”
McCarthy described the series as more than just a mystery, emphasizing its focus on the emotional and societal impact of the tragedy. “This is not a whodunit.
It’s not like, ‘Ooh, there’s a big reveal!’ This is a character study of everyone who was caught in the undertow, and a look at all of us – as a civilization, really.
Seeing that happen to a child I think breaks everybody,” she explained.
The show explores various theories that circulated during the investigation, presenting the chaos and confusion that surrounded the case. “We do show all these different theories.
They were all real working theories. Showing the chaos of it is something that we’ve not seen.
It’s a new telling of it, because you’re like, ‘My God, is this really what was happening?’” McCarthy added.
Portraying Patsy Ramsey, who passed away in 2006, was a challenging role for McCarthy. Although she never met Patsy, McCarthy has written letters to John Ramsey, JonBenét’s father, expressing her commitment to portraying Patsy and the family’s story with respect and care. She also noted the emotional toll the project took on the cast, with a psychologist available on set to support anyone struggling with the weight of the case.
The investigation into JonBenét’s death has been fraught with complexities. In 1999, a grand jury voted to indict the Ramseys on charges related to child abuse resulting in death and being accessories to a crime.
However, no signs of forced entry were found at the family home, leading to ongoing speculation that the crime might have occurred inside the residence. In 2008, advances in DNA testing identified an unknown male’s touch DNA at the scene, which led to the official exoneration of the Ramsey family.
Despite these developments, the identity of JonBenét’s killer remains unknown, keeping the case shrouded in mystery decades later.
The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey premieres globally on Netflix on December 10.
