The family of Nolan Wells has released the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s autopsy report following his unexplained death earlier this year. Wells, an 18-year-old Black college student, was found face down in the water near Horn Island after a boating trip off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
According to the state autopsy report, the cause and manner of Wells’ death remain undetermined due to the unclear circumstances surrounding his passing. The report notes “two dark red-purple subcutaneous scalp contusions” on the back of his head but found no external scalp injuries or skull fractures.
The family expressed that the autopsy raises more questions than answers about what happened on July 4. They sought an independent autopsy, which similarly concluded that the cause and manner of death could not be determined, though it did reveal “acute blunt force injuries to the head and body prior to his death.”
A grand jury has since reviewed the case and decided that there is insufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges at this time. However, Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, publicly challenged the conclusion, questioning how drowning could be ruled the cause when trauma was evident and inconsistencies remain in the investigation.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated in July that there was no immediate sign of foul play but confirmed that authorities are continuing their efforts to uncover the full circumstances of Wells’ death. The family’s call for transparency and further investigation underscores the unresolved nature of this tragic case.
