A Kansas mother, Mariah Thomas, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death. The 28-year-old reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, who dropped the murder charges in exchange for the guilty plea.
The case shocked the nation when it emerged that Thomas had placed her one-month-old daughter, Za’Riah Mae, in a hot oven in February 2024. Thomas claimed it was a tragic mistake, saying she intended to put the baby down for a nap but “accidentally placed her in the oven instead of the crib.”
Emergency responders arrived after a neighbor alerted authorities, reporting concerns about the infant’s welfare. Upon entering the home, officers detected smoke and found Za’Riah deceased, with severe burns so extensive that her clothing had melted onto her skin.
Court documents described the infant’s condition as having “apparent thermal injuries on various parts of her body,” with her bodysuit and diaper fused together and heavily burned. Investigators also collected a charred baby blanket from the scene as evidence.
Friends and community members have since remembered Za’Riah as a baby who was “smiling all the time,” mourning the loss of the young life cut tragically short. The heartbreaking incident has drawn widespread attention and underscored the importance of child safety awareness.
