Ed Sheeran’s scheduled performances this weekend at Gillette Stadium in Boston have been officially canceled due to an approaching severe nor’easter storm. This latest development adds to the challenges facing the British singer-songwriter amid ongoing controversies surrounding his current Loop Tour.
The 35-year-old artist’s tour has been overshadowed by political tensions after Macklemore was removed as the opening act following his “Free Palestine” statement at a September 4 concert. Sheeran faced significant backlash over his response, which many viewed as inadequate, resulting in several supporting acts withdrawing from the tour.
A representative for Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, told TMZ that stadium officials, tour management, and public safety authorities have been closely monitoring the weather forecast. Given the predicted dangerous conditions throughout the weekend, the decision was made to cancel the concerts with fan and staff safety as the paramount concern. Refunds are being processed automatically for tickets purchased via Ticketmaster, with other purchasers able to obtain refunds from their points of purchase.
After his departure from Sheeran’s tour, Macklemore announced his own “Free Palestine” tour dates across Dublin, Paris, and London later this month, with further US dates expected to be revealed soon.
On September 15, Sheeran issued a statement clarifying that the choice to remove Macklemore was made by the tour promoter, not by him personally. He emphasized that while he has personal views on the conflict, he prefers to express support privately rather than publicly. Sheeran reaffirmed his commitment to using his platform to promote unity and humanity rather than engage in political activism.
Despite these efforts, the controversy led to the loss of Sheeran’s remaining four supporting acts, all of whom voiced solidarity with Macklemore. Addressing fans during a recent Philadelphia concert, Sheeran acknowledged the gravity of the situation, condemning the attacks in Israel and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He expressed regret for disappointing some fans but reiterated his reluctance to be cast as an activist musician caught in a highly charged political debate.
As the Loop Tour continues amid weather disruptions and political controversy, Sheeran’s focus remains on delivering music that unites his audience rather than divides it.
