On September 26, Amelia Dimoldenberg, creator of the popular YouTube series Chicken Shop Date, made a memorable debut as host of Saturday Night Live UK’s third episode of season two. Known for her trademark deadpan humor, Amelia delivered a sharp and witty monologue alongside musical guest Rachel Chinouriri, but it was one particular jab that stole the spotlight.
During her opening remarks, Amelia referenced her past interviews with various celebrities, including Idris Elba and Cher, before turning to a playful yet cutting comparison involving Ed Sheeran. “I’m incredibly privileged to have done so many interviews with people like Idris Elba, Cher, and even a world-famous red-headed puppet with a hand up his a- telling him what to say,” she quipped, prompting laughter as an image of her with Elmo appeared on screen.
Then, with perfect timing, she added, “No, the other one,” as a photo of her interview with Ed Sheeran was displayed. The audience responded with cheers, applause, and hearty laughter, all while Amelia maintained her signature straight-faced delivery.
The joke quickly went viral on social media, with fans praising Amelia’s savage humor. Comments ranged from “LMAO SHE ATEEEEE” to “This was savage.
Poor Ed Sheeran is learning the cost of moral abdication.” Others expressed admiration for Amelia’s sharp wit, calling her “my queen” and urging her to “get him again.”
This playful roast arrived amid some challenging headlines for Sheeran. Just one day before the episode aired, Ed was forced to cancel his scheduled concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, due to severe weather warnings brought on by a nor’easter storm. The storm threatened the region with heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal flooding, making it unsafe for large events.
Adding to the turbulence, Ed’s tour recently faced controversy after stadium owner Robert Kraft reportedly threatened to cancel his shows if rapper Macklemore-who had voiced pro-Palestine views-continued to appear as a supporting act. Macklemore was subsequently removed from the tour, and other backing musicians pulled out ahead of Ed’s Philadelphia performance the previous weekend.
Despite the offstage drama, Amelia’s sharp and humorous take on Sheeran’s public image gave audiences plenty to talk about-and showcased why she remains one of the UK’s most compelling comedic voices.
