In 2004, Gretchen Wilson burst onto the country music scene with her debut single “Redneck Woman,” which soared to No. 1 on the charts and held that position for an impressive five weeks. Now, more than two decades later, a new female artist has matched that rare feat.
Stella Lefty’s breakout hit “Boston” is currently enjoying its second consecutive week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. This achievement makes Lefty the first solo female artist since Wilson to have her debut single maintain the top spot for multiple weeks. According to Billboard, “Boston” secured the No. 1 position on the Country Airplay chart dated October 3, drawing 29.5 million audience impressions during the week of September 18-24.
The journey of “Boston” from an unfinished snippet shared online to one of 2026’s biggest country-pop crossover hits has been remarkable. Lefty has now joined an exclusive group of just six solo female artists whose first entry on the Country Airplay chart has stayed at No. 1 for multiple weeks. Prior to Lefty, this milestone was last achieved by Wilson in 2004, and also by Deana Carter with “Strawberry Wine” in 1996 and Trisha Yearwood’s “She’s in Love With the Boy” in 1991.
“Boston” also set a record for the fastest climb to No. 1 by a debut single from a solo woman in 22 years, reaching the summit in just 22 weeks-second only to Wilson’s “Redneck Woman,” which took only 12 weeks to get there. The song had steadily gained momentum all summer, peaking at No. 6 on the Hot 100 and No. 11 on Country Airplay by late July. Additionally, it marked the first Country Airplay No. 1 for Atlantic Outpost, a new imprint under Atlantic Records launched in 2025.
The story behind “Boston” adds to its charm. Lefty began writing the song during a brief moment at a piano in Nashville, with just 15 minutes before a date.
A snippet of the unfinished track posted online quickly gained viral attention. The song also sparked discussions due to similarities between its chorus and Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season,” resulting in Kahan receiving a songwriting credit alongside Lefty, Grace Enger, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, and Joe Reeves.
Released earlier this year as the lead single from Lefty’s debut album Long Way Home, which came out on August 21, “Boston” has propelled Lefty into the spotlight. Following a series of performances this fall, she is set to launch her 2027 Long Way Home Tour on January 9 at The Fillmore in Detroit. The tour will feature stops across North America, including Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Brooklyn, Atlanta, Nashville, and San Francisco, concluding with a hometown show at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on February 20.
