At the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards held Sunday at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre, Taylor Swift paid a heartfelt tribute to country music icon Dolly Parton, who passed away in August at age 80.
Swift, 36, was nominated an impressive 11 times-second only to Madonna’s 13 nods-and took home the prestigious Video of the Year award for her evocative music video, “The Fate of Ophelia.” During her acceptance speech, Taylor dedicated the honor to Parton, whom she described as the “ultimate showgirl,” referencing Dolly’s final album, The Life of a Showgirl.
“Every single song that she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid and so rich – listening to her songs is like watching the best music video in your life, every single time you hear what she has written,” Swift said. She praised Parton’s grace, joy, love, and gratitude throughout her career, noting how the legendary artist channeled life’s experiences back into appreciation for her fans.
Taylor expressed how fortunate she felt to be among those fans, promising to remain one always. She closed her tribute with warmth: “I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time. And thank you for this amazing moment, I love you all.”
In addition to her win, Swift was honored with the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a new accolade recognizing artists who direct their own music videos. The award celebrates those who have expanded the creative possibilities of music video storytelling through a distinctive directorial voice.
Taylor has been recognized in this category seven times, winning four awards to date. Her directorial credits include videos for “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite,” “The Man,” “Cardigan,” “Willow,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone, “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault),” “Karma” featuring Ice Spice, and “Lavender Haze.”
Swift also debuted the music video for her new single “Patient Zero” during the ceremony, further showcasing her artistic versatility on one of music’s biggest nights.
