Taylor Swift is set to premiere the music video for her new single from the expanded deluxe edition of her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
The single, titled “Patient Zero,” along with three additional new tracks, was released on Friday, September 25. It quickly soared to the top of Spotify’s Global charts, becoming the most-streamed song by a female artist in a single day this year, with an impressive 13.7 million streams. However, the following day saw a significant shift, as the 36-year-old pop icon broke a new Spotify record for the largest single-day drop for a female artist’s track.
This development follows remarks from a VMA producer, who hinted that Taylor Swift’s Artist of the Year award would be “even larger” than the prestigious Video Vanguard honor.
Despite the initial streaming success, “Patient Zero” experienced a steep 59% decline in daily streams the next day, falling to 5.5 million streams and dropping to the number two spot on the charts behind Karol G’s “BbY WOW.” The song drew mixed reactions, with critics and fans criticizing its lyrics and vocal delivery as uninspired.
Music publication Pitchfork also revised its rating for The Life of a Showgirl, lowering it from 5.9 to 4.9 after the new release-a notable setback for the singer.
Previously, Taylor had indicated on her husband Travis Kelce’s podcast New Heights that she did not intend to release additional songs connected to the album. Nevertheless, the announcement of the new single on September 22 sent fans into a frenzy, sparking social media speculation as they searched for clues in Taylor’s recent Emmy Awards appearance and the album’s music videos.
The upcoming music video for “Patient Zero” features an A-list Hollywood cast, including Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, ahead of its highly anticipated debut at the VMAs. At the ceremony, Taylor will receive the first-ever Artist Director award, marking her 31st MTV Video Music Award and solidifying her status as the most-awarded artist in the history of the show.
While her NFL-star husband is expected to miss the event due to a Kansas City Chiefs game in Florida against the Miami Dolphins, Taylor will be front and center on September 27. The VMAs will air live at 7:30 PM EST on CBS and MTV from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by rapper Snoop Dogg. Madonna leads this year’s nominations with 13 nods.
