Jane Asher, former fiancée of Paul McCartney, has revealed she will not be watching the upcoming Beatles biopic series, despite being depicted in the films.
Asher, 80, was romantically involved with McCartney, also 80, from 1963 until their separation in 1968. The couple announced their engagement in 1967, a relationship that is now portrayed on screen with Lucy Boynton-known for her role in Bohemian Rhapsody-cast as Jane. The four-part film series, directed by Sam Mendes, is slated for release in April 2028.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Asher disclosed that although filmmakers reached out to her, she chose not to collaborate or discuss her past relationship with McCartney publicly. “I decided years ago it would be a blank,” she explained, emphasizing her preference to keep that chapter private. Nevertheless, she complimented Boynton’s portrayal, noting, “Well, of course, Lucy is beautiful.”
Asher, who has been married to cartoonist Gerald Scarfe since 1981, added that she won’t watch the films to avoid being asked about them. She also mentioned turning down offers to speak about her time with McCartney, acknowledging the passage of time since their relationship inspired classic Beatles songs like “And I Love Her” and “For No One.”
The biopics feature Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Harris Dickinson as John Lennon. The project charts The Beatles’ rise from their early days in Liverpool to their global superstardom and eventual breakup in 1970.
Recently, the actors were seen recreating the iconic Abbey Road album cover in London, delighting fans who shared their excitement on social media. Meanwhile, Paul Mescal confirmed in an IndieWire interview that he will perform all of his own singing in the films, fully committing to the role without lip-syncing to existing McCartney recordings.
The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event is scheduled to premiere in theaters on April 7, 2028.
