A toddler at a daycare in Canton, Michigan, caused alarm on Monday after pulling out a loaded handgun. Fortunately, no one was injured during the unsettling incident at Children’s World Early Learning Center.
Authorities confirmed the firearm belonged to the child’s parent, who is a police officer. The officer was taken into custody as the investigation continues. Importantly, the gun in question was not a service weapon.
During a press briefing, Police Chief Joseph Bialy commended the daycare staff for their quick thinking and decisive actions that kept all the children safe. “A teacher in the room immediately recognized what was happening and intervened swiftly,” Bialy explained. “Without their response, the outcome could have been very different.”
Chief Bialy emphasized that the incident appeared to lack any malicious intent but highlighted the critical importance of firearm safety and secure storage. He described footage of the child removing the gun from a backpack as “shocking” and difficult to watch, despite the safe conclusion.
Local residents voiced concern as well. One nearby resident remarked, “The parent should have exercised better control. Firearms need to be securely locked away at home to prevent any access by children.”
In response to the event, the daycare announced plans to strengthen security measures, including conducting thorough backpack checks moving forward. The center also released a statement expressing pride in their staff’s rapid response and reaffirming their commitment to safety: “We are one of the safest centers in the Canton area, and we avoided what could have been a tragedy.”
The case will be referred to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete.
