Moving Back Home After a Layoff Helped Me Find a New Path

Additional Coverage:

After being laid off in 2023, I faced a tough reality: job hunting in New York City is costly and emotionally draining. Nearly a year later, I was at a crossroads-should I stay in the city, slowly depleting my savings, or move back in with my parents in the New England suburbs?

At first, the idea of moving home felt like defeat. It challenged my identity, as I’d long defined myself by my stressful corporate job. But without job prospects and with bills piling up, I made the difficult decision to leave NYC behind in January 2025 and return home.

This move gave me space to heal and reassess what success truly means. My mental health had taken a hit during my previous job, leaving me anxious and lacking confidence. Encouraged by loved ones, I began working with a career coach who helped me shift focus from chasing titles and paychecks to finding fulfillment and happiness.

It wasn’t an overnight turnaround. Five months later, I landed a part-time operations manager role at a small nonprofit. While the pay was modest and there were no benefits, the job allowed me to rebuild my confidence by solving day-to-day challenges and creating order out of chaos.

Living with my parents and working part-time wasn’t the plan I imagined, but I redirected my energy toward personal growth. I lost 40 pounds, started writing a book, dated again, and even planned a trip to Ireland for my 35th birthday. Although I have less than before, my life feels richer and more balanced.

Nearly two years after moving back home, I recently accepted a full-time job that aligns with my goals-after turning down several offers too similar to my old role. If I had known how long this journey would take, I might have given up.

Instead, I’m grateful I found the strength to keep going. And who knows?

Maybe someday soon, I’ll move out of my parents’ house for good.
