Kid Rock has officially embraced a new spiritual direction, debuting his Christian single “James 1:17 (Jesus Is King)” on October 1. This release marks the beginning of a faith-focused phase leading up to his forthcoming album, Halfway 2 Jesus, set to drop on October 17. The 17-track project will also feature a collaboration with fellow Michigan native Eminem on the song “7 Sins.”
However, the buzz surrounding the new single quickly shifted from its religious themes to reactions about Kid Rock himself. In a promotional video for “James 1:17,” Rock reflects on his life journey, his faith, and the value of spiritual fulfillment over material wealth.
His lyrics reveal a personal transformation:
“I have wandered through the ages and flipped through all your pages,
Every stage of life I’ve run through, I refuse to compromise.
I’ve been locked up in your cages, and my sins became contagious.
But when I got right with Jesus Christ, I found things that money can’t buy.”
Rock shared that the song came to him during an early morning creative burst, written in about 30 minutes. The title references a New Testament verse emphasizing that every good and perfect gift is from above.
The music video holds special significance, as Rock dedicated it to his longtime keyboard player Jimmie Bones, who was diagnosed with ALS earlier this year, and to fan Kalvin Lynch, who faces an inoperable brain tumor and whose Make-A-Wish was to drum alongside Kid Rock. The video also features Pakistani children associated with the charity Miraculous Love Kids.
Despite the heartfelt intentions, social media reactions were mixed. On platforms like X and Threads, some users criticized Kid Rock’s appearance and vocal delivery, with comments ranging from playful jabs to more disparaging remarks.
Phrases like “Kid Rock bottom,” “Kid Jelly,” and accusations of substance use surfaced, alongside skepticism about the sincerity of the project. Others simply expressed disbelief or disappointment in his current artistic direction.
Conversely, Kid Rock’s Instagram followers offered considerable encouragement, praising his new music and supporting his spiritual journey.
As Kid Rock embarks on this new chapter, public opinion remains divided, reflecting the challenges artists often face when reinventing themselves.
