Minnesota Celebrates Historic Win Over Michigan, Captures Little Brown Jug
In a thrilling upset at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday, Minnesota ended a decade-long drought by defeating Michigan 20-14 to claim the coveted Little Brown Jug. This victory marks only the Gophers’ second triumph over the Wolverines in 40 years and their first since 2014.
With under a minute left in the game, Minnesota’s Bryce Underwood, who had faced scrutiny over his starting role earlier, threw an intentional pass out of bounds on fourth-and-five, effectively sealing the win. As the clock expired, jubilant Gophers fans flooded the field while “Mr. Brightside” – traditionally associated with Michigan – played over the stadium speakers, adding an ironic soundtrack to the celebration.
The festivities grew lively, with supporters even forming a dance circle near midfield. Social media quickly buzzed with reactions, including some noting the irony of Minnesota playing Michigan’s unofficial anthem during their post-game revelry.
One fan remarked, “Minnesota playing the stupid a– song we play at Michigan Stadium is brutal,” while another found humor in the moment: “Minnesota playing Mr. Brightside in the celebration after the game was hilarious.”
Others lamented the loss of both the game and the iconic song.
Michigan’s offense struggled throughout much of the contest, managing only 190 yards on 49 plays. Underwood completed 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards but threw two costly interceptions in the second half.
One critical turnover came late in the third quarter when an errant throw intended for wide receiver JJ Buchanan was intercepted by Minnesota defensive back Aydan West, who secured the catch near the sideline. The Gophers capitalized quickly, driving 34 yards to set up a 26-yard field goal by Luke Drzewiecki, narrowing the deficit to just one point.
Underwood’s difficulties continued as he was intercepted again early in the fourth quarter by Zack Harden, who also caught a second interception moments later. Minnesota took advantage of these opportunities, with running back Darius Taylor scoring a decisive three-yard touchdown reception to put the Gophers ahead.
Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck expressed his elation after the game, praising his team’s resilience and spirit.
“This team’s heart, their how, their spirit. Our community, our state, they never stopped believing in anything,” Fleck said.
“This team is resilient. And there’s pandemonium in Minneapolis right now.”
Reflecting on the significance of the win, Fleck added with a smile, “Besides my marriage and my kids being born, this might be the best day of my life!”
