Lauren Sanchez Faces Backlash Over White House Gown and Responds with Cryptic Message

Additional Coverage:

Lauren Sanchez recently shared a cryptic message on Instagram addressing “bitter people” amid criticism over her outfit at a White House state dinner. The former journalist posted a quote stating, “Some people are mean and bitter because they had a rough childhood.

Some people are kind and caring for the same reason. Your choice.

Let that sink in. Your choice.”

The timing of the post drew attention, coming shortly after Sanchez faced online backlash for her attire at President Donald Trump’s dinner honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping. She has not specified whether the message was a response to the comments about her look.

Sanchez, 56, attended the event on September 24 with her husband, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. She wore a striking black Alexander McQueen gown with an off-the-shoulder design and a plunging neckline, paired with a bold diamond necklace and drop earrings. Bezos opted for a classic black suit.

While some praised Sanchez’s glamorous style, others criticized the gown as too revealing for the formal occasion. One commenter remarked, “Money does not buy one class.

She dresses terribly. So inappropriate.”

Another added, “Have some dignity for goodness sake. This is a state dinner, and you are 56 years old.”

Additional critics focused on the dress’s fit and apparent undergarments.

The conversation about Sanchez’s outfit persisted days after the event. A dress resembling hers was listed online for $6,190, though her actual purchase price remains unknown.

Meanwhile, her diamond necklace attracted significant attention, with jewelry expert Ashleigh Bergman estimating its value at around $10 million. Bergman described the necklace as featuring graduated emerald-cut stones ranging from 3 to 5 carats each, with a central stone estimated between 15 and 20 carats.

Sanchez and Bezos were among a notable group of attendees at the White House dinner, which included top government officials and leading figures from the tech industry such as representatives from Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

This is not the first time Sanchez’s wardrobe at a political event has sparked debate. At Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, she wore a white pantsuit with an exposed lace bustier, which elicited mixed reactions on social media.

First Lady Melania Trump also made a distinctive fashion choice for the state dinner, foregoing the traditional gown in favor of a white Saint Laurent blouse with an oversized bow, paired with black Dolce & Gabbana pants featuring a peony pattern-a flower symbolizing prosperity in Chinese culture.
