The California State University (CSU) system has reached a tentative deal with the California Faculty Association (CFA) after just one day of the union’s five-day strike. The CFA represents nearly 30,000 faculty and staff members. The agreement includes a retroactive salary increase, an increase in parental leave, and protections for faculty. The CFA described the deal as a victory for “People Power” and believes it will greatly improve working conditions for faculty and learning conditions for students.
Under the tentative agreement, CFA members will receive a retroactive 5% general salary increase effective from July 1, 2023, and an additional 5% increase on July 1, 2024. The deal also includes an increase in the salary floor by $3,000 and extends parental leave from six weeks to 10 weeks. The agreement also provides additional support for faculty, such as union representation during meetings with police, improved access to gender-inclusive bathrooms and lactation spaces, and support for lecturer engagement in service work.
CSU Chancellor Mildred GarcĂa expressed her pleasure and appreciation for reaching common ground with the CFA, noting that the agreement enables fair compensation for faculty while maintaining the long-term financial sustainability of the university system. Previously, CSU officials had offered a 5% salary increase over three years, effective January 31, and eight weeks of parental leave.
The five-day strike was originally intended to last until Friday, but with the tentative deal in place, faculty is expected to return to work on Tuesday, January 23. CSU is the largest public university system in the United States.
