A member of the Proud Boys who participated in the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, has been sentenced to six years in prison. Marc Bru, 44, was found guilty of two felonies and five misdemeanors in October. Despite pleas for leniency from his lawyers, Bru showed no signs of remorse and defiantly told the judge that he would do it all over again even if given 100 years.
Prosecutors had requested a sentence of more than seven years for Bru, describing him as one of the least remorseful defendants from the January 6 incident. According to the Department of Justice, Bru was among the first to breach the restricted perimeter on the Capitol grounds. He spent hours harassing Capitol police officers and physically obstructed their attempts to control the situation. Bru also entered the Capitol building and took selfies inside.
Six weeks after the riot, Bru attempted to organize a violent insurrection in Portland, Oregon, according to officials. The FBI arrested him on March 30, 2021, but he was released before being arrested twice more for driving under the influence.
In addition to his prison sentence, Bru has been fined $7,946 and ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution. Governor Jay Inslee criticized the defendant and highlighted former President Trump’s previous statements about pardoning individuals involved in the Capitol attack.
To date, over 1,265 individuals have been charged for crimes related to the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
