The Georgia State Senate voted on Friday to establish a special committee to investigate Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis regarding allegations of misspending tax dollars in the prosecution of former President Trump. The committee’s role is to make recommendations on state laws and spending based on its findings. It does not require approval from the Georgia House or Governor Brian Kemp and does not have the authority to directly punish Willis.
The state Senate vote resulted in a 30-19 outcome. Republicans argue that the committee is necessary to determine whether Willis misused taxpayer money. On the other hand, Democrats view it as a partisan effort in support of Trump.
Willis has faced accusations of a romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she appointed as head of Trump’s 2020 election interference case. Trump’s supporters claim that the alleged relationship is evidence of prosecutorial misconduct. Although Willis has not publicly responded to the allegations, she defended Wade’s qualifications in a speech on January 14. It has been reported that Wade’s divorce case includes credit card statements showing purchases of plane tickets for him and Willis to Miami and San Francisco.
Many of the Republicans who supported the creation of the special committee also backed Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia.
The bill states that if the relationship between Willis and Wade is proven, it would be considered a clear conflict of interest and fraud against the taxpayers of Fulton County and Georgia. This would provide grounds for Willis to recuse herself from the cases and appoint a new prosecutor instead of Wade.
Georgia State Democrats expressed their disappointment with the Republicans’ decision, claiming that it is an attempt to punish an elected official for telling the truth. They also accused the GOP of diverting attention from Trump’s alleged crimes regarding the 2020 election.
