More than a dozen people were injured in a serious multi-vehicle crash on the U.S.-50 Bay Bridge in Maryland on Saturday morning, according to authorities. The incident happened on the westbound span of the bridge, which crosses the Chesapeake Bay.
Investigators from the Maryland Transportation Authority Police believe that a “chain-reaction crash” involving 23 vehicles occurred on the westbound span. Additionally, there were a series of “secondary crashes” involving approximately 20 vehicles.
Thirteen people were transported to local hospitals, with two of them sustaining serious injuries. However, none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
The westbound span of the bridge was closed for several hours as tow operators worked to clear the vehicles involved in the crash. All lanes were reopened by 2 p.m. according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.
Authorities have advised drivers to expect delays in both directions on the bridge. The cause of the crashes is currently under investigation by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.
The Bay Bridge’s dual spans are among the longest over-water structures in the world, stretching for four miles. It is also known as the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial Bridge and connects the eastern shore of Maryland with Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.
