An Aeromexico passenger caused a stir when he opened the emergency exit and walked onto the wing of a plane on Thursday. Surprisingly, at least 77 other passengers supported his actions and signed a handwritten statement defending him. The passengers claim that their flight had been delayed for four hours, which they believed put their health at risk.

The incident occurred while the plane was parked and waiting for takeoff at Mexico International Airport in Mexico City. The airport clarified that the man opened the emergency door while the plane was stationary and then re-entered the cabin without causing harm to the aircraft or anyone else. The authorities were informed, and the passenger turned himself in accordance with international security regulations.

Despite the unusual act, many of the man’s fellow travelers rushed to support him. A total of 77 passengers signed a handwritten statement expressing their solidarity, which was shared online along with photos of the signatures. According to the statement, the airline kept the passengers waiting for four hours without proper ventilation or water during the delay. The passengers believe that the man opened the emergency exit to protect everyone and that his actions saved their lives.

Flight data from flightradar24 revealed that the flight, AM762, was supposed to depart at 8:45 a.m. but experienced a delay and did not take off until 2:18 p.m. The delay was caused by a maintenance alert, triggering the captain to return to the gate and prompting the unhappy passengers. It was during this time that the man opened the emergency door and stepped onto the wing, ultimately leading to a change of aircraft.

Aeromexico representatives have not yet provided a comment on the incident. This is not the first time in recent months that a passenger has ventured onto a plane’s wing or opened an emergency exit. In July, a passenger on an AirFrance flight attempted to open an emergency exit midair to test its functionality and was subsequently arrested. In another incident in November 2023, a Southwest Airlines passenger jumped out of an emergency exit and tried to steal a truck in Louisiana, causing panic among fellow travelers.
