A convoy organized by a group called “Take Our Border Back” has encountered numerous problems during its journey to Texas, according to WIRED. The group, also known as “God’s army,” had hoped to mobilize a large number of trucks to prevent migrants from crossing the Texas-Mexico border. However, the convoy has experienced slashed tires, disputes among members, and a participant being stranded. Despite receiving donations and media attention, the turnout for the convoy has been lower than expected.
WIRED reported that the issues began before the convoy even started. Some participants woke up to find their car tires slashed outside their hotel. Additionally, the original meeting location for the convoy was changed at the last minute, causing confusion and a need for a new gathering point. Approximately 20 vehicles gathered in a parking lot in Norfolk, Virginia, far fewer than the number the group had hoped for.
Craig Hudgins, one of the organizers, remained optimistic, claiming that 40,000 truckers from the United States and Canada would soon join the convoy. However, no other trucks joined that day, and the convoy experienced further difficulties. One of the vehicles immediately got lost after departure, and there were disagreements among the group regarding accommodations during a planning meeting.
Tensions within the convoy may have resulted in one participant being kicked out. According to WIRED, the main bus of the convoy pulled over and removed the individual, leaving him stranded in Florence, South Carolina, without his wallet. The reasons for his expulsion remain unclear. The “Take Our Border Back” convoy has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The group’s goal is to address illegal immigration and secure the border, as the number of migrants attempting to cross the border has reached unprecedented levels. US officials reported that about 300,000 people tried to enter the country last month. However, it is uncertain how the convoy plans to confront migrants and prevent their entry into the US.
