Prince Edward of the British royal family has decided to take a break from his royal duties. According to The Telegraph, Edward, who is 59 years old, is taking some time off after completing his trips to South Africa and St. Helena earlier this month. During his visit, he had the chance to meet a tortoise that his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, had also met during her visit in 1947. Edward’s next appearance is scheduled for February 8, where he will attend a reception and a talent showcase.
This break comes at a time when both King Charles III and Princess Kate Middleton are recovering from their respective surgeries. Kate recently underwent a planned abdominal procedure and is expected to remain in the hospital for ten to fourteen days before returning home to recover. It is unlikely that she will resume her public duties until after Easter. In support of his wife, Prince William has canceled two of his appearances.
In addition to Kate’s surgery, it was also announced that King Charles III would be undergoing surgery for an enlarged prostate. The palace stated that the procedure was corrective and that Charles’ public engagements would be postponed for a short period of time while he recovers. After a successful surgery, Charles was discharged from the hospital and is now working from home on paperwork.
While Edward, Kate, William, and Charles take their breaks, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, will continue with their royal duties. Camilla recently visited the Royal Free Hospital and provided an update on Charles’ condition, stating that he is “getting on” and “doing his best.”
