The youth baseball league, League 42, which recently had its Jackie Robinson statue stolen and destroyed, has received an overwhelming amount of donations to replace the tribute. Over $175,000 has been raised so far for the cause.
Previously, we reported that the bronze figure of the baseball legend was taken from outside the league’s facility in Wichita, Kansas. Unfortunately, it was later found completely destroyed in a trash can fire at a nearby park on Tuesday.
To help replace the Robinson statue, a GoFundMe campaign was launched. Although the statue was valued at around $75,000, the campaign has now surpassed its goal.
League 42 has decided to keep the fundraiser active, as the extra money collected can be used to support the organization’s various programs and improve their fields with new lighting and artificial turf. The league’s annual budget has risen to $400,000, and the funds raised will enable young kids to learn the sport without the burden of high entry fees.
The organization expressed gratitude for the support it has received, stating that the generosity shown by individuals has left them speechless. They are thankful for the outpouring of support and the impact it will have on their community.
Meanwhile, the police are still on the lookout for those responsible for stealing and destroying the statue.
