A riot involving around 200 inmates at Ironwood State Prison in Riverside County, California, triggered a threat assessment at all prisons across the state. The incident occurred during a contraband investigation when an inmate headbutted a staff member and other prisoners rushed the guards. The prisoners did not comply with orders and the riot was eventually stopped with the use of chemical agents, warning shots, and non-lethal impact rounds. Eight staff members and one prisoner were hospitalized but have since been discharged. As a result of the riot, a 24-hour modified programming protocol has been implemented in all California facilities. Ironwood is currently investigating the incident and has identified 30 prisoners directly involved in the riot. Movement within Facility D at Ironwood is restricted during the investigation.
