Entrepreneur Mark Cuban recently engaged in a heated online argument with Tesla CEO Elon Musk over diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The debate quickly turned ugly, with Musk and his supporters resorting to insults. Cuban stated that while X (referring to the platform where the argument took place) is a good place to argue, he will be using Threads more often, Meta’s Twitter alternative.

Cuban discovered that relying on Elon Musk’s X for enlightened debates or stimulating discussions on current issues may not be the best idea. Last month, he defended corporate DEI programs on the social media platform and invited users to join the conversation, including an employee from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. However, the discussion soon deteriorated into an exchange of insults, particularly from Musk himself.

Throughout Cuban’s posts, Musk labeled him a “liar” and “racist,” and sarcastically questioned whether the Dallas Mavericks (an NBA team Cuban was previously the majority owner of) would include “white/Asian women.” Cuban was not surprised by Musk’s attacks but was taken aback by the levels of antisemitism and hate that followed.

Cuban expressed his disappointment with X, stating that it had become an echo chamber where people monetize the agreement of others. Despite the changes made by Musk to the platform, such as scrapping the old verification process and reducing the content moderation staff, Cuban still believes X is a place for arguments and breaking news. However, he mentioned using Threads more frequently.

Cuban acknowledged that Twitter is not reflective of real life and is primarily a platform for arguments, breaking sports news, and promoting things within Musk’s created echo chamber. He emphasized that he continues to use X because he finds it interesting to argue with people who disagree with him. When asked if he had any suggestions for platform improvements, Cuban stated that it is Musk’s decision as it is his company.

A spokesperson for X did not respond to a request for comment. Despite the tensions and negative experiences on the platform, Cuban still sees value in using X for arguments and engaging with dissenting viewpoints while also exploring Threads as an alternative.
