Authorities have alleged that Patrick Mahomes’ father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., was driving with an open can of beer in his car before being arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) on Saturday night. The allegation is detailed in an arrest affidavit from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. According to the New York Post, the affidavit states that Mahomes Sr. was found with an open 16-ounce Coors beer in his center console when he was pulled over in Tyler, Texas at around 8:30 PM.
During the stop, Mahomes Sr. reportedly told the officer that he had consumed a few beers while watching a game at a local bar before getting behind the wheel. The arrest was initially initiated due to expired tags on his car and his slower driving compared to the rest of the traffic in the area.
The arresting officer claimed that Mahomes Sr. failed field sobriety tests once he was out of the vehicle, stating in the affidavit, “I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place.” As a result, Mahomes Sr. has been booked on a felony charge of driving while impaired. This is his third DWI offense, and if convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Despite the arrest, Mahomes Sr. will still be allowed to travel and watch his son play in the Super Bowl this weekend. There is no travel ban imposed on him as part of the conditions of his bond. However, it is uncertain if the Chiefs quarterback will want his father in attendance.
Patrick Mahomes II, the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback, has not yet made a public statement regarding the matter. However, he is expected to meet with the media later on Monday evening as part of Super Bowl week’s Opening Night.
