Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert has been granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-husband, Jayson, following a series of incidents. The order was issued after Boebert accused Jayson of attacking their teenage son, threatening her, and taking a rifle from their home without permission. The couple finalized their divorce in October but have experienced ongoing conflicts during the separation.
The temporary restraining order provides protection for their three younger sons and may be made permanent at a hearing scheduled for Thursday. In her request for the order, Boebert mentioned a previous argument in January 2022, where Jayson claimed she had hit him, but later retracted the accusation. Jayson faced charges of disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, and obstructing a peace officer in relation to the incident.
According to court documents, Boebert also stated that Jayson had made numerous threats of self-harm and harm towards her over the past 14 months. In response, Jayson claimed he was unaware of the restraining order and explained that he had entered the family home to clean it ahead of the arrival of Boebert’s grandmother. He denied any intentions of causing harm and expressed a desire to move on peacefully.
Jayson also accused Boebert of using the restraining order to justify her decision to switch congressional districts in December. Boebert, a far-right Republican and ally of former President Donald Trump, relocated to a new district to avoid a tough reelection race and cited the family turmoil as one of the reasons for her move.
Additional details mentioned in Boebert’s request include a physical altercation between Jayson and their 18-year-old son on January 9. During the incident, Jayson grabbed a rifle and left the home, leading to charges of harassment, prohibited use of a weapon, and third-degree assault. Boebert was not present during the altercation.
Jayson did not provide direct responses to questions regarding the January 9 incident in his text messages to the Associated Press. The temporary restraining order will stand until the hearing on Thursday determines whether it will be made permanent.
