Customs Officer Found Guilty of Allowing Drug Smuggling into U.S.

Additional Coverage:

Authorities disclosed that a former U.S. Customs officer was found guilty of receiving bribes to allow vehicles laden with drugs to enter the United States from Mexico.

The officer, identified as Leonard Darnell, facilitated the entry of at least 19 drug-carrying vehicles through a San Diego border crossing from late 2021 to June 2022, in exchange for $13,000 per vehicle. These vehicles transported large quantities of methamphetamine, along with lesser amounts of cocaine, fentanyl, heroin, and even smuggled individuals.

Court records reveal that George had struck a deal with two criminal organizations, offering them a specific one-hour window to pass through his lane unnoticed. Textual evidence presented in court showed George’s agreement to a $17,000 bribe per vehicle, with one instance in June 2022 where he amassed $68,000 for facilitating the passing of four drug-trafficking vehicles.

On a notable occasion coinciding with the receipt of a $13,000 bribe, George purchased a 2020 Cadillac CT5 as a Valentine’s Day gift for a member of the trafficking ring, according to prosecutors. Despite attempts to reach George’s lawyer, Antonio Yoon, for comments, there was no immediate response.

The conviction came after a trial at the U.S. District Court in San Diego on Monday, finding George guilty on several charges including bribery by a public official, conspiracy to import controlled substances, and allowing unauthorized entry of vehicles.

U.S. Attorney Tara K.

McGrath condemned George’s actions as a betrayal of his duties.

Testimonies during the trial painted a picture of George’s lavish lifestyle funded by the proceeds of his crimes, including extravagant spending at a strip club in Tijuana, where he was known to extravagantly tip dancers and purchase expensive gifts.

George is scheduled for sentencing on September 13, facing a wide range of penalties from 10 years to life in prison.
