Filipino Troops Engage in Hand-to-Hand Combat with Chinese Coast Guards, General Reports

Additional Coverage:

In a recent event that escalated tensions in the disputed South China Sea, Filipino troops found themselves in a violent confrontation with Chinese coast guard personnel, as reported by General Romeo Brawner, a leading figure in the Philippines military. The altercation involved the Chinese coast guard using edged weapons against the Filipinos, who were unarmed, leading to physical injuries and damage to Philippine vessels. One of the soldiers suffered severe injuries resulting in the loss of a thumb.

Despite the gravity of the allegations, Beijing has refuted any claims of aggression, stating that their actions were within legal bounds. However, this incident has drawn sharp criticism from both Philippine and U.S. officials, denouncing China’s aggressive tactics.

The confrontation took place as the Filipino navy and coast guard were conducting supply missions in the region. According to General Brawner, the Chinese personnel not only collided with but also boarded the Philippine boats, attacking those on board. The Philippine military has since released images showing the extent of the damage and the weapons wielded by the Chinese coast guard.

General Brawner took a firm stance against these actions, highlighting them as a clear breach of international laws and Philippine sovereignty. He emphasized the threat such behavior poses to peace and stability in the region, expressing a commitment to collaborating with international partners to address the issue.

This incident is part of a series of recent escalations in the region, including a previous encounter where a Chinese ship was filmed colliding with a Philippine vessel and deploying water cannons. Both the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, MaryKay Carlson, and Philippine Coast Guard Commodore Jay Tarriela have publicly condemned China’s actions, with Tarriela suggesting that China’s intent is to incite conflict.

In contrast, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, Lin Jian, defended China’s conduct as lawful and professional, accusing the Philippines of provoking the situation. This ongoing dispute underscores the broader tensions in the South China Sea, a region known for its strategic and economic significance.
