Additional Coverage:

MINNEAPOLIS – Simone Biles once again proves why she’s at the pinnacle of gymnastics, leading the pack after the initial round of the 2024 U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials.

As expected, Biles, the reigning world champion acclaimed as the greatest of all time, was virtually assured a spot on the Paris team before the trials even began. Her impressive score of 58.900 on Friday night further solidified her path to official selection. The trials dictate that only the top all-around competitor is certain of an Olympic team spot.

Jordan Chiles (56.400) and Suni Lee (56.025) are currently second and third, respectively, as the trials head into the concluding session on Sunday night, which will determine the final five-member team.

The evening was also marked by injuries that might impact team selection. Shilese Jones, the current world bronze medalist, who has been managing a shoulder injury, hurt her left knee during a vault landing in the warm-ups. This led her to limit her competition to the uneven bars, where she excelled, despite raising concerns about her physical condition for Paris.

Kayla DiCello’s evening ended early due to a vault injury that appeared severe, resulting in her immediate withdrawal from the event.

Highlights of the night included Jordan Chiles drawing inspiration from music icons Beyonce, Megan Thee Stallion, and GloRilla to claim the second-highest score behind Biles, demonstrating her readiness for a second Olympic appearance.

Simone Biles, meanwhile, captivated the audience with a Yurchenko double pike on the vault, earning a standing ovation, a testament to her unmatched prowess in the sport.

Amidst the outstanding performances and unfortunate injuries, the trials continue to be a testament to the athletes’ tenacity and dedication as the final team selection for Paris approaches.
