A newly released royal photograph of King Charles III has captivated fans, drawing favorable comparisons to a more controversial earlier painting by artist Jonathan Yeo.

The photograph, unveiled to commemorate Armed Forces Day, showcases the 75-year-old monarch in full military dress. According to a statement on the royal family’s Instagram account, King Charles, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, is depicted wearing his Field Marshal No.1 Full Ceremonial Frock Coat, complete with medals, sword, and other decorations.

Captured by photographer Hugo Burnand, the image features King Charles seated in an ornate green chair, dressed in his military uniform and clutching a ceremonial sword. His military cap and gloves are placed on a nearby end table.

This portrait has been met with enthusiasm from royal enthusiasts, some of whom have voiced their preference for it over a previous portrayal by Yeo. Admirers of the photograph have praised its classic style, with one calling it a “fantastic picture” and another appreciating its stark contrast to the earlier, less favored portrait.

In response to a commission by The Draper’s Company, Jonathan Yeo’s portrait of Charles was revealed last month and has been installed at London’s Draper’s Hall. This painting, Yeo’s first official portrait of the monarch since his May 2023 coronation, stirred debate among fans over its artistic interpretation, particularly its color palette.

Yeo, who sought to honor the Welsh Guards with his selection of red, aimed for a modern yet approachable piece that balanced traditional elements with a contemporary flair. Despite the mixed reception, Charles, who is currently facing a battle with cancer, reportedly endorsed the final product.

Yeo, describing the process, noted that apart from considerations regarding the portrait’s size and the King’s attire, he received little direction, allowing for considerable artistic freedom. The artist emphasized his intention to create a harmonious blend of color and personality in his depiction of the King.
