Teamsters Union Chief Sean O’Brien Speaks at RNC, a First for Teamsters

Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, delivered a notable keynote address at the Republican National Convention, marking a significant departure from the typical pro-business rhetoric often associated with the event. His speech is historic as he is the first leader in the 121-year history of the Teamsters to speak at the convention.

The Teamsters, traditionally a supporter of Democratic candidates and have not yet endorsed anyone for the 2024 election, are exploring new political avenues as the Republican Party adopts more populist themes, appealing to the working class. O’Brien emphasized that the Teamsters are not automatically loyal to any party, stating, “Today, the Teamsters are here to say we are not beholden to anyone or any party.

We will create an agenda and work with a bipartisan coalition, ready to accomplish something real for the American worker. And I don’t care about getting criticized.”

O’Brien’s speech boldly targeted large corporations such as Walmart and Amazon and criticized the Chamber of Commerce, likening it to a union for big business, which are not traditional subjects for a Republican audience. He expressed a strong disenchantment with the political system, conveying that it fails the working class, saying, “The American people aren’t stupid, they know the system is broken.”

Adding drama to the event, former President Donald Trump, who recently survived an assassination attempt, praised O’Brien’s oration. Trump’s reaction, along with his family and allies, was viewed positively, particularly when O’Brien remarked, “President Trump is a candidate who is not afraid of hearing from new, loud and often critical voices, and I think we all can agree, whether people like him or they don’t like him, in light of what happened to him on Saturday, he has proven to be one tough S.O.B.” This comment won a hearty response from those present.

O’Brien disclosed that he had sought invitations to speak at both the Republican and Democratic national conventions, with Trump personally extending an invitation to him for the RNC. O’Brien praised Trump for this gesture, saying it was unprecedented and highlighting the openness of the Republican candidate to diverse viewpoints.

The address by O’Brien points to a notable shift in the Republican Party since Trump’s 2016 campaign, moving the party’s focus from corporate interests towards advocating for workers’ rights and broader populist issues.
