Richard Simmons Discusses Impact of ‘Loss’ in Last Interview Before Passing

Additional Coverage:

Fitness icon Richard Simmons recently discussed his perspectives on life, grief, and dealing with loss in a detailed conversation, only days before his unexpected passing at the age of 76.

“In managing loss, it impacts you deeply, straining your heart,” Simmons expressed in an interview released on July 15 by People magazine. “People handle it differently; some cry, some look to the heavens. It’s incredibly difficult to farewell those we love, but I believe that when our time comes, we will be welcomed by beautiful angels with warm smiles.”

The renowned fitness enthusiast had stepped back from the limelight in 2014. He mentioned that although he was aware people missed him, the sentiment was mutual.

Despite being out of the public eye, Simmons pointed out that he continued to connect with his admirers through phone calls and emails. “Retiring was a decision led by my body’s need to rest,” he explained in the interview. His time away allowed him reflection on his impacts, prioritizing the help he has offered to others over his personal accomplishments.

Richard Simmons passed away at his home in Los Angeles on July 13, shortly after celebrating his 76th birthday. Authorities declared his death at the scene, with natural causes believed to be the reason.

Moreover, Simmons extended his thanks to his fans on Facebook for their birthday wishes. “I really appreciate your kind gestures. Although I don’t know everyone’s birthday to return the favor, I wish you all a happy and healthy birthday as well!”

In March, Simmons faced a health scare with a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, which he successfully had treated earlier this year.

Simmons subtly dismissed titles like “legend” or “icon,” focusing rather on his personal experience. He remarked on his shy and introverted nature off-stage, contrasting with his vibrant and joyful persona during performances, all aimed at uplifting others.
