Police Fatally Shoot Armed Homeless Man Near Republican Convention Site

Additional Coverage:

July 16 (UPI) — In Milwaukee, an officer from Ohio fatally shot a homeless man armed with a knife approximately one mile from the site of the Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum. The incident unfolded in a residential area close to the Convention venue.

During a confrontation involving the homeless individual and another person, the situation escalated when the homeless man brandished a knife, resulting in the officer shooting him, according to WSB-TV. Reports indicate that three bicycle patrol officers encountered the man as he wielded knives and turned towards them aggressively. A bystander reported to the New York Post that the man was armed with two steak knives and swung them at officers before being shot.

This shooting comes as security is heightened around the Republican National Convention following a recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The officers involved are part of a contingent of 4,500 police tasked with securing the event.

The incident, which occurred near local social service, correctional, and community centers in Milwaukee’s King Park neighborhood, took place just hours before the second day of the convention was scheduled to begin. Police from Columbus, Ohio, were involved in the response, which occurred outside the convention’s secure zone. Authorities are currently investigating the shooting.
