Air Force Announces Court-Martial for Pentagon Leaker Jack Teixeira

Additional Coverage:

Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard who admitted to leaking classified information online, will face a military court-martial, the U.S. Air orce announced. No specific date for the court-martial, which will occur at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts, has been determined as of yet.

The charges against Teixeira stem from alleged breaches of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, per an Air Force statement. The first accusation against him claims he disobeyed an order to stop accessing information unrelated to his duties on specific dates in September 2022 and April 2023. The second charge involves allegations that he attempted to obstruct justice by disposing of an iPad, computer hard drive, and cell phone, and by instructing someone to erase Discord messages he sent, all occurring between March and April 2023.

Last year, Teixeira was indicted by a federal grand jury on six counts for illegally retaining and transmitting national defense-related classified information. According to federal prosecutors, prior to his arrest in April 2023, he accessed, printed, and shared hundreds of classified documents on Discord. He pleaded guilty to all charges and agreed to a 16-year prison term in March, avoiding additional charges under the Espionage Act.

His federal sentencing is set for September 27. However, the military has the authority to separately prosecute service members who have been convicted in federal court. In May, the Air Force conducted an evidential hearing to decide whether to proceed with a court-martial.
