Shōgun Dominates 2024 Emmy Craft Nominations with 16 Nods

FX’s “Shōgun,” a well-received samurai series set in feudal Japan developed by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, topped the Emmy’s technical categories on July 17, securing 16 nominations. It was closely followed by “Fallout” on Prime Video, HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” each receiving 13 nominations.

The nominations were widely spread among other shows, with Netflix’s “The Crown” and FX’s “The Bear” each getting nine. Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale,” Max’s “Hacks,” and Netflix’s “Ripley” earned eight nominations.

Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs.

Smith” and FX’s “Feud: Cap seeds with six nominations, among several others receiving fewer nods, such as “What We Do in the Shadows” from FX and Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.”

Notable shows missing from the list of nominations included HBO’s “The Sympathizer,” Prime Video’s “Expats,” Showtime’s “The Curse,” and “The Acolyte” from Disney+/Lucasfilm.

“Shōgun” not only stands as the frontrunner for Best Drama but also led overall with 25 nominations, celebrated for its vivid artistry in portraying the Sengoku period. Its nominations range from period-specific production design to sound mixing and stunt performance.

“Fallout,” under the creative vision of Jonathan Nolan, ranks as “Shōgun’s” direct competitor. The series captured nominations in categories like fantasy/sci-fi costumes and various editing and sound categories. Its strongest chances lie in cinematography, visual effects, and sound categories.

“Issa López’s” chilling series “Night Country” features Jodie Foster and Kali Reis unraveling a supernatural mystery in Alaska and has garnered nominations across editing, makeup, music, and special effects.

Among comedies, “Only Murders in the Building” elevated its antics in its third installment, securing spots in several comedy-specific categories such as choreography and music supervision. Meanwhile, “The Crown” in its final season transitioned more contemporary themes and captured nominations for its cinematography, sound mixing, and other areas.

“The Bear” made a significant splash in its second season, particularly in comedy categories, reflecting its acclaim with a record-breaking 23 nominations.

For animated shows, nominations included “Blue Eye Samurai” on Netflix, “Bob’s Burgers” on Fox, “Scavengers Reign” on Max, “The Simpsons” on Fox, and Disney+/Marvel’s “X-Men ’97,” with the latter emerging as a particularly strong contender.
