WASHINGTON — Renowned filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and the iconic rock band Grateful Dead top the list of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors awardees.

The prestigious lifetime achievement award in the arts will also be presented to jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, blues musician Bonnie Raitt, and the historic Harlem theater, The Apollo. These recipients have left significant marks in their respective fields, with The Apollo known for its pivotal role in launching numerous Black artists’ careers.

The celebrations for the 47th Kennedy Center class will include a night filled with tributes and performances on December 8 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, with a scheduled broadcast on CBS on December 23.

The Grateful Dead, who began as a folk-influenced group in 1960s San Francisco, have evolved over the decades into a major cultural force and one of the most successful touring bands. Despite the death of lead guitarist Jerry Garcia in 1995, the band has maintained its vibrant touring schedule, now performing as Dead and Company with guitarist John Mayer.

Coppola, at 85, is celebrated for his visionary films and bold risks, notably with his classics “The Godfather,” and “Apocalypse Now.” Despite past financial challenges and industry clashes, Coppola expressed joy and surprise upon receiving this honor, highlighting a special appreciation for being recognized alongside his fellow San Francisco legends, the Grateful Dead.

Arturo Sandoval, who defected from Cuba with the help of jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, praised the honor as a validation of his long career in music. Similarly, Bonnie Raitt reminisced about her deep history with the Kennedy Center Honors, her experience enriched by previous performances for other honorees.

The inclusion of a venue rather than an individual, The Apollo Theater, underscores its unique contribution to the arts over its nine-decade history as a launchpad for Black talent. The theater, currently undergoing renovations, continues to be a vital cultural hub under the management of CEO Michelle Ebanks who celebrated the recognition.

Each laureate’s unique contribution to cultural life and the arts is poised to be highlighted during the upcoming December festivities, underscoring the broad and ongoing impact of their work across generations and genres.
