Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle have announced the arrival of their first child together. The 33-year-old WNBA star shared in a July 19 interview with CBS Sports that their son was born on July 8. Expressing her joy, Griner revealed she would be nicknamed “pops” and described feeling an immediate shift in priorities upon seeing her son, who weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces.

Despite the joy of new parenthood, Griner acknowledged the challenges of balancing her career and family life, especially with upcoming commitments like the WNBA All-Star weekend in Phoenix and the 2024 Paris Olympics. She noted the difficulty of having to leave her son so soon but remained optimistic he would understand, mentioning her phone is now filled with his photos.

Earlier in April, the couple had excitedly shared news of the pregnancy on social media, expressing anticipation to meet their “favorite human being.” Their relationship began during their college days at Baylor University in Texas, where they met between 2009 and 2013. Griner reminisced about their first encounter in a 2020 Instagram post, playfully debating whether Cherelle had accused her of taking her milkshake.

The couple has experienced significant challenges, particularly in 2022 when Griner was detained in Russia on drug charges for 10 months. She was released in December following a high-profile prisoner exchange, approved by President Joe Biden, for international arms dealer Viktor Bout. Reflecting on their reunion, Cherelle described to People magazine the overwhelming happiness and relief she felt seeing Brittney again after her detainment.
