Halle Berry Embraces ‘Catwoman’ Razzie, Asserts Oscar Pride

Halle Berry remains steadfast in her support of the humorous and spirited speech she gave at the Razzies two decades ago. The Golden Raspberry Awards, widely known as the Razzies since their inception in 1981, celebrate the less commendable performances and films of the year. In 2004, Berry, aged 57, boldly accepted her Worst Actress award in person for her role in the unsuccessful film “Catwoman.”

Berry explained to Entertainment Weekly during an interview for the 20th anniversary of “Catwoman,” how meticulously she prepared her speech. She aimed to make her acceptance light-hearted and clear that she didn’t take the criticism to heart.

“You can never take away my Oscar. You say I earned this [Razzie], alright, I’ll take this too.

You accept the good and the bad,” she commented.

During the ceremony, Berry humorously carried her Best Actress Oscar for “Monster’s Ball” (2001) and didn’t shy away from mocking Warner Bros. for the negative impact “Catwoman” had on her career. She thanked the studio sarcastically for casting her in a “terrible” film, which significantly brought her from the height of her career to a new low.

In her talk with Entertainment Weekly, Berry revealed that Warner Bros. was aware of her plans to make the satirical speech at the Razzies. She intended to embrace the event’s critical spirit by humorously denigrating the film along with the critics.

Reflecting on the film 20 years later, Berry believes the poor reputation of “Catwoman” is undeserved and maintains no ill will towards the film’s team. She appreciates the effort everybody put into making it, including herself, and still finds enjoyment in the movie.

Despite the negative press surrounding “Catwoman,” Berry noted that it didn’t significantly affect her career or dampen her passion for acting. She emphasized the resilience she’s built throughout her life, particularly as a Black woman, stating that a bit of bad publicity wasn’t going to deter her from her love for acting.
