Contenders Emerge for Kamala Harris’ Vice Presidential Pick

Additional Coverage:

Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” where he endorsed Vice President Kamal Harris shortly after President Joe Biden’s unexpected exit from the presidential race. With the Democratic nomination next month looking very likely for Harris, discussions around her potential vice presidential candidate have begun to intensify.

Beshear not only supported Harris but also quickly shifted his focus to criticizing Senator JD Vance of Ohio, particularly highlighting controversial remarks Vance made about abortion and abusive marriages during his 2022 Senate campaign. Governor Beshear took this opportunity to distinguish himself, emphasizing his Kentucky roots in contrast to Vance, whom Beshear pointed out spent most of his upbringing in Ohio, despite his family’s connections to Kentucky as detailed in his book, “Hillbilly Elegy.”

The Kentucky governor expressed openness to the possibility of being Harris’s running mate, stating that it’s something he would consider if approached. During the interview, he reiterated his desire to define what being a Kentuckian means on a national stage, distancing himself from Vance’s image and connection to the state.

Meanwhile, as Harris solidifies her position as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, several other politicians are aligning as supporters and potential vice presidential picks. This includes Governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, Roy Cooper of North Carolina, and other prominent Democrats like Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, JB Pritzker of Illinois, and Gavin Newsom of California, as well as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia also clarified he will not be challenging Harris after contemplating a potential run. The race to secure the Democratic nomination appears to be settling as no significant opposition to Harris has materialized, with many within the party quickly rallying behind her candidacy.
