Joe Manchin Declines to Challenge Kamala Harris in Upcoming Election

Additional Coverage:

Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who switched his registration to Independent in May, has declared he will not enter the presidential race to challenge Vice President Kamala Harris. Manchin shared his decision on CBS Mornings, explaining that he does not see himself running for president but rather aims to represent mainstream America.

Despite foregoing a presidential bid, Manchin critiqued his former party’s swift consolidation of support around Harris, labeling the move as premature. He advocated for a more competitive selection process for the Democratic nomination, expressing concern over the lack of a rigorous primary battle. His comments come soon after President Joe Biden endorsed Harris, who quickly became the favored candidate following Biden’s decision to not seek re-election.

As the Democratic Party prepares for its nominating convention next month, Manchin’s brief flirtation with a presidential run had stirred concerns among Democrats of a potentially divided party. However, after his announcement and Biden’s endorsement of Harris, the party looks set to proceed with Harris as its leading candidate against former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
