Jurors Confirm ‘Rust’ Shooting Was Accidental Following Baldwin’s Case Dismissal

Several jurors involved in Alec Baldwin’s recent trial for the “Rust” shooting have voiced their thoughts about the strength of the case, which was ultimately dismissed. In discussions with The New York Times, jurors Johanna Haag and Gabriela Picayo shared their doubts about Baldwin’s involvement.

Haag, identified as juror No. 7, remarked that as the trial progressed, the accusations seemed increasingly weak. Picayo, known as juror No. 9, felt that Baldwin, aged 66, should not have been on trial, especially after armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

During the filming of “Rust” in October 2021, Baldwin was handling a gun that unexpectedly discharged, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. The weapon had a live round, though Baldwin has consistently denied pulling the trigger. Juror Picayo expressed skepticism about Baldwin’s expertise in gun safety, suggesting he likely relied on the crew’s professionalism.

Baldwin faced charges of involuntary manslaughter in January 2023, to which he pleaded not guilty the following month. Despite the initial charges being dropped in April 2023, the indictment was refiled, and his trial began on July 9 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Baldwin’s family, including his wife Hilaria, attended the trial to show support.

The trial concluded quickly when First Judicial District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer decided on a dismissal on July 12, citing potential suppression of evidence by prosecutors. This dismissal prevents the reinstitution of the manslaughter charges against Baldwin. Following the decision, Baldwin expressed gratitude on Instagram to those who supported him, emphasizing his appreciation for the kindness shown towards his family.

In the meantime, Gutierrez-Reed, already sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter, is pursuing a reversal of her conviction or a new trial, alleging significant procedural errors during Baldwin’s trial.

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin did not celebrate the dismissal of his case, treating the moment as one of private family reflection rather than of joy, recognizing the gravity of the whole situation despite feeling a sense of relief.
