Harry Connick Jr. Reveals He and Wife Have ‘No Rules’ After 30 Years of Marriage

Additional Coverage:

Three-time Grammy Award winner Harry Connick Jr. revealed that he and his wife, Jill Goodacre Connick, prefer not to set specific rules for their marriage. In a conversation with People magazine, Connoly shared how after three decades together, the couple focuses on trust, love, and communication rather than strict guidelines.

“We’re just grateful for each other every day and strive to be good partners and parents,” Connick explained, adding, “We’re not big on rules.”

The couple, married since 1994 and parents to three daughters—Georgia, 28, Kate, 26, and Charlotte, 22—also apply this flexible approach to parenting. Connick noted that they aim to set an example rather than preach rules, believing in the importance of self-worth and sound decision-making in their children.

Experts in relationship counseling acknowledge that while clear rules can help in building trust and avoiding misunderstandings, they aren’t essential for all couples. According to James Chong, Clinical Director at The Lion Mind Singapore, many couples benefit from agreeing on important aspects like emotional openness, financial transparency, and sharing responsibilities.

Jean XM Chen, from Relationship Matters, pointed out that such agreements are particularly useful early in relationships. However, as couples grow more familiar with each other’s needs and preferences, rigid rules may become superfluous and even counterproductive.

Both experts agree on the importance of flexibility and advise that rules should support, not constrain, a relationship. In cases where rules lead to control issues or emotional withdrawal, professional counseling might be necessary.
