Harris Launches TikTok Account After Announcing Candidacy

Additional Coverage:

Vice President Harris has recently joined TikTok, coinciding with a surge in her social media presence following the announcement of her campaign. In a TikTok video posted on Thursday, Harris mentioned, “I’ve been on the ‘for you’ page recently, so I decided to join myself.”

On TikTok, a platform favored by Generation Z, Harris has increasingly been the subject of memes, especially since she emerged as the probable Democratic presidential nominee. Her campaign has even embraced these memes, notably using the theme of Charli XCX’s hit 2024 album “Brat” in their promotional materials on the social media platform X.

Harris’s growing popularity across various social platforms might indicate expanding support among younger voters. CNN’s Van Jones remarked on Monday that TikTok has notably shifted public perception of Harris from “cringe” to “cool.”

He pointed out, “What’s happening on TikTok right now is extraordinary. A lot of quirks that seemed odd about Kamala — her laugh, the coconut tree comment, and others — have been transformed by a new generation into something trendy through their TikTok videos.”

As the likely Democratic candidate, Harris is expected to face former President Trump in the upcoming election. Following President Biden’s recent withdrawal from the race, polls from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ show Harris trailing Trump by 2.1 points, with her at 45.7% support compared to Trump’s 47.8%.
