U.S.-Supplied Bradley Vehicles Make Impact in Ukraine-Russia Conflict

Additional Coverage:

In the challenging landscapes of eastern Ukraine, notably near Avdiivka and Stepove, Ukrainian forces have effectively utilized Bradley fighting vehicles supplied by the US. These vehicles have become instrumental in executing bold maneuvers, armored warfare, and rescuing casualties under fire.

A particular incident illustrated their tactical use when a video released by Ukraine’s defense ministry showed a Bradley outmaneuvering a Russian T-90 tank — reputed to be among the best worldwide, according to President Vladimir Putin. The Bradley, primarily designed for transporting infantry and engaging lighter fortifications, was not expected to best a heavy tank like the T-90. However, in this encounter, the Bradley disabled the Russian tank using its 25 mm autocannon, demonstrating its effectiveness under unexpected circumstances.

Despite this, the Bradley’s lighter armor does make it vulnerable, especially without the backup of heavier tanks like the Abrams. Nevertheless, its speed, armament, and features such as night vision have allowed it to play a versatile and critical role on the front lines. Ukrainian crews have found the vehicle’s armor surprisingly resilient, even capable of enduring some direct hits which Soviet-era designs could not.

Ukraine originally received these vehicles in anticipation of a summer counteroffensive. However, they faced significant challenges such as mines and drone-enabled warfare that limited their impact.

After the failure of a large-scale tactical deployment, the Ukrainian military adapted by employing the vehicles in smaller, more agile units. This tactic allows them to perform various missions, from supporting troops on the ground to evacuating civilians.

The adaptability and effectiveness of the Bradley were further underscored during incidents where individual Bradleys destroyed Russian armored vehicles near strategic locations in eastern Ukraine. The vehicles have even addressed modern threats such as drones, using their autocannons to neutralize aerial targets.

Military analysts have noted the Bradley’s versatility, acknowledging both its strengths and vulnerabilities. With Ukrainian forces adjusting their strategies based on the combat challenges, these vehicles have proven to be resourceful assets on the battlefield. As the war continues, both the US and Ukraine are learning and adapting their tactics, as evidenced by ongoing modifications to make the Bradleys more resilient against drone and air attacks.
