Machine Gun Kelly has recently shared details about his personal battle with substance abuse and his path to sobriety. Speaking on Bunnie Xo’s podcast “Dumb Blonde,” the artist behind “Emo Girl” openly discussed his mental health challenges and his decision to abstain from all substances.
“I’ve stopped drinking and haven’t had alcohol since last August,” he revealed during the podcast session on Monday, August 5.
The 34-year-old musician, whose real name is Colson Baker, also shared that he quietly sought treatment at a rehabilitation facility following his European tour in 2023. “It was my first time in rehab.
They helped me understand the root of my anger and provided methods to manage it,” MGK said. “Understanding my condition has helped me make peace with it, though it’s like walking a tightrope every day.”
Bunnie Xo, who appeared in the music video for “Lonely Road” with her husband Jelly Roll, along with Kelly’s fiancée, Megan Fox, commended Kelly for his commitment to sobriety. She recalled a moment when she had hoped for a drinking contest between her husband and Kelly, to which he had firmly responded with his commitment to sobriety.
Kelly also opened up about the extensive nature of his past substance use, which included alcohol, marijuana, and prescription pills like hydrocodone, Percocet, and Vyvanse.
During the discussion, Kelly credited his fiancée Megan Fox as a significant support in his sobriety journey. The couple, who started dating in 2020 and got engaged in 2022, has navigated both highs and lows together.
Moreover, Kelly highlighted the impact of his 15-year-old daughter, Casie Colson Baker, on his decision to become sober. He shared a poignant moment when she pointed out his substance use, which deeply affected him and further motivated his recovery efforts.
A year into his sobriety, Kelly expressed gratitude towards those who supported him and acknowledged the positive changes he has experienced, hoping he has become more pleasant to be around.
