Actor Akili McDowell, 21, Charged with Murder

Akili McDowell, known for his roles in “Billions” and “David Makes Man,” faces murder charges following an incident at a Houston apartment complex. The 21-year-old actor was apprehended last Thursday after he allegedly shot and killed a man, states a news release from the Harris County sheriff’s office.

Legal documents indicate McDowell is also accused of stealing property worth between $100 and $750. Attempts to reach his legal representation for comments have been made by USA TODAY.

Law enforcement discovered 20-year-old Cesar Peralta with fatal gunshot injuries on July 20 after responding to reports of a shooting. Witnesses claim Peralta was involved in a confrontation with another individual who subsequently fled the scene.

Currently, McDowell is held in custody with a bail set at $400,000, and is scheduled to appear in court on October 9.

McDowell has previously appeared as Savion Williams in two episodes of the Showtime drama “Billions” during its fifth season. He gained further recognition playing the lead in the OWN series “David Makes Man,” which chronicles the challenges faced by a gifted boy from a poor background in South Florida. The series aired for two seasons from 2019 to 2021.

In addition to these roles, McDowell’s career includes participating in the 2015 film “Criminal Activities,” the ABC mini-series “The Astronaut Wives Club,” and portraying a young George Washington Carver in the Trinity Broadcast Network series “Chase the Lion.” He is also set to appear in the upcoming 2024 crime drama “The Waterboyz.”
