Elon Musk Accused of Inciting Far-Right Unrest on His Own Platform, Expert Claims

Additional Coverage:

Violent far-right protests have erupted across the UK, following a tragic stabbing incident at a children’s dance class. Misinformation quickly spread online, incorrectly identifying the perpetrator and exacerbating the unrest.

Elon Musk, the CEO of X (formerly Twitter), has been criticized by the British government for his comments related to the disorder, further stirring tensions.

These riots have been fueled by false claims that the assailant was an illegal immigrant, leading to attacks on properties and clashes with the police. Despite early reports, the actual suspect, 17-year-old Axel Muganwa Rudakubana from Cardiff, was later revealed by a judge in an effort to quell the violence.

The misinformation seemed to originate from social media, with a non-existent individual named Ali Al-Shakati wrongfully accused as the attacker in a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport. Despite denials from the person who supposedly started the rumor, the falsehood had already taken hold, propelled by prominent far-right figures.

Adding to the controversy, Musk’s platform X has been singled out for allowing the quick spread of these fake news stories, which were initially amplified by accounts with large followings and minimal fact-checking.

Moreover, responses from Musk, such as equating the UK’s police actions with those of the Soviet Union and implying biases in police responses, have only inflamed the situation. His posts challenged the responses from British authorities and pushed narratives often supported by far-right activists.

Critics suggest that Musk may be influenced by the very platform he owns, as the echo chamber effect of social media consolidates conspiratorial and one-sided viewpoints.

The unrest and Musk’s responses have ignited discussions about the responsibility of social media platforms in controlling misinformation and the role they play in national security.
